Frontier Worlds
Beyond the relatively safe sovereign space of the interstellar alliance of humans known as the Commonwealth of Interstellar Colonies (CIC) lies worlds colonized by those that do not fall under its jurisdiction. These, frontier worlds, are numerous and beyond the count of the CIC colonies. Inhabited by people hailing from anywhere, they are often cultural melting pots of varying sizes, and the sizes do vary quite a lot.
The largest colony outside CIC space is Hellion with circa 830 million citizens. It is a largely industrialized planet with enormous open pit mines, steelworks and construction yards. The majority of frontier worlds are used by mining companies as means to exploit them by the use of automated mining equipment, often robots depending on relatively simple scripts for automation rather than incorporating artificial intelligence.
These worlds are almost exclusively uninhabitable which without the use of sealed habitats would be unable to sustain the skeletons crews of maintenance personnel required to keep any equipment running. While several frontier world maintain diplomatic contact with the CIC, there is little to no trade between parties aside from trading technological advances.

Puzzlewood is an ancient woodland site, near Coleford in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England. The site, covering 14 acres, shows evidence of open cast iron ore mining dating from the Roman period, and possibly earlier.
In 1848 some workmen, after moving a block of stone in the woods, found a small cavity in the rocks. In this cavity, hidden away, were three earthenware jars containing over 3,000 Roman coins. No-one knows why the coins were hidden away in the cliff face nor by whom.
J. R. R. Tolkien, a frequent visitor to the Forest of Dean, may have visited Puzzlewood, and many believe Puzzlewood was the inspiration for the fabled forests of Middle-earth, such as the Old Forest, Mirkwood, Fangorn or Lothlórien contained within The Lord of the Rings. J.K Rowling is also said to have visited Puzzlewood, and it may have been this that influenced her idea of The Forbidden Forest in the Harry Potter books.
